VIXToscope II Status Update

I’m trying to sprint to the finish line of getting my art application into the art support people. Because this is a bigger structure (15-20 feet high category) I have to supply drawings, including construction drawings, as well as a rendering that will appear in various places.

To do this, I’m laying everything out in Autodesk’s Fusion CAD program. Although I’ve briefly used older CAD programs in the past, I’m more or less a total noob and its taken me 6 months of poking at it with a stick to get to the point of being at least passably efficient. I’m now feeling good and am cranking through stuff, mostly thinking about how the real-world structure needs to be as opposed to wasting dozens of hours figuring out how to make that design in the CAD program.

This is a significantly bigger kaleidoscope compared to my first one, and also has a “building” surrounding it to protect people from sun/wind/dust/rain. One of the big lessons learned from last year was the ‘scope really needs it to be dark to enjoy most fully, which was the beginning of thinking of some type of “darkness” structure around the front end. That’s evolved now to being a small building you walk into.

I’m actively looking for volunteers to help out. Unlike the first one, this is big enough that I can’t do it all alone, so if you’d like to help in any of these areas, please reach out:

– Leave No Trace Lead / Moop Master
– Setup help a couple days before the burn on a Work Access Pass
– Teardown help / demooping a day or two after the burn
– (Possibly) Drive a UHaul box truck to/from the burn, need to show up early/stay late
– Pre-Burn: a large clear space (25’x40′ with 20′ height clearance) to practice the setup/teardown before we hit playa
– Pre-Burn: help doing the trial setup
